Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP)
Under the Biosecurity Act, Council produces and implements a Regional Pest Plant Management Plan.
The West Coast Regional Pest Management Plan 2018-2028 provides a framework for managing pests in our region over 10 years. The Plan takes a pragmatic approach to pest management on the West Coast, providing Council with the tools required to assist the community in protecting the regions conservation, production and recreational values. It does not set out our day-to day operational planning, this is outlined in our Annual Operational Plan.
The Pest Management Plan outlines specific pest management programmes depending in the distribution within the region. Programs have objectives to exclude, eradicate, progressively reduce, or keep pests at current levels.
These programmes include:
Exclusion Programme: to prevent the establishment of pest plants that are present in New Zealand but not yet established in the area.
Eradication Programme: to reduce the infestation level of the pest plant to zero levels in an area in the short to medium term.
Progressive Containment Programme: to contain or reduce the geographic distribution of the pest plant to an area over time.
Sustained Control Programme: to provide for ongoing control of the pest plant to reduce its spread to other properties and impact on environmental or production values.
