How do we manage the natural hazards facing the Westport community? What do we need to do as we look towards the future?
It’s a fact that our community will be more at risk from hazards in the future.
Over the past eight months, the Westport 2100 Working Group has been meeting monthly to work through the information on the various hazards facing our community to determine how to manage these. There is no one answer, or straightforward approach, to deal with these issues.
The purpose of the Working Group is to engage with the Westport community and work together, with the Councils, to identify a pathway forward for the town for the benefit of future generations. The project has a long term focus and will result in recommendations to both the Buller District Council and West Coast Regional Council for future work programmes for emergency management, hydrology and operations.
We need to do the work now to prepare over time for that future.
The Working Group have identified 32 recommendations to take to the Buller District Council and West Coast Regional Council to progress actions to improve the resilience of the wider Westport community. The recommendations proposed are outlined in full in the Report to Council below. A summary of the proposals and background information is included in the Westport 2100 Community Information Sheet.
