Hokitika Floodwalls Stage 1B
Stage 1B of the Hokitika Floodwalls project is about to get underway. Contractors, Henry Adams Contracting Ltd, start work on 15 July 2024.
The height of the stopbank will be increased between the SH6 bridge and Livingstone Street to provide protection against a 1:100-year flood level, and provide an additional 600mm of freeboard.
When finished these works will align with the Northern Hokitika Riverbank, from the corner of Gibson Quay / Livingstone Street upstream past McMullan ITM, completed in August 2023.
The Floodwalls project was co-funded through the COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund announced by the Government in May 2020.
Some disruption is expected while the construction to raise the stopbank height takes place.
There will be no public access from downstream of the SH6 bridge to Livingstone Street during this time. A diversion of the corresponding section of the West Coast Wilderness Trail will be in place throughout construction. While there will be some truck movements occurring as part of the work, these are not expected to be disruptive.
The works are expected to take about 14 weeks to complete, subject to weather.
