Long or Strong: GET GONE

New signage is making an appearance at coastal locations the full length of the West Coast. From the Kohaihai north of Karamea, to Jacksons Bay in the south, 125 signs provide a reminder to people in the area that if they feel an earthquake that is either long or strong: get gone.

Mark Crowe, Director of Civil Defence West Coast, said that it is really important for people to follow this advice.

“If you are at the coast and experience any of the following:

- Feel a strong earthquake that makes it hard to stand up, or a weak rolling earthquake that lasts a minute or more;

- See a sudden rise or fall in sea level; or

- Hear loud and unusual noises from the sea,

move immediately to the nearest high ground, or as far inland as you can,” said Mr Crowe. “Do not wait for the official warning.”

A tsunami is a series of waves caused by large earthquakes.

“All of New Zealand is at risk of earthquakes and all of our coastline is at risk of tsunami,” said Mr Crowe. “We cannot predict when one will happen, but we can protect ourselves and our family.”

Remember, LONG or STRONG: GET GONE.
